This Bhutanese Wooden Cup, locally called Phob are made from wood burl. Hand-carved by artisan, it is finished with a coat of a natural oil to enhance the wood pattern.
Wood turning is an art in Bhutan. It is taught at the institutes of the thirteen Arts and Craft established to preserve the traditions. According to the locals, these wooden bowls are an integral part of the Tibetan lifestyle and this explains the high demand for these products in Tibet.
Traditionally, wooden bowl and cup are used to serve food among Bhutanese household. Wooden cup are not just eco-friendly but studies have found that wood actually retains fewer bacteria than plastic.
