This handheld prayer wheel in copper and brass is engraved with Om Mani Padme Hum mantra on the outside and a dangling Lotus flower. Handmade to look antiqued, the wheel is made of brass and copper with a hand carved wooden handle.Inside are scrolls containing mantras and prayers which multiply with each turn.It can be opened to add your own prayers.
The prayers wheels is ubiquitous in Bhutan. The cylindrical wheel ranges from hand-held to huge powered wheel which are filled with prayers mantras. Monks and devotees spin the well to multiply the number of prayers they expressed by millions. Buddhist also believes that by spinning the well, it helps to concentrate the mind on the mantras and the prayers they are reciting.
The Mani wheels (handheld) are used when one walks around places like monasteries and chortens (a religious structure containing Buddhist relics). They are sometimes carried around for hours, and even on long pilgrimages. Spin the wheel clockwise whenever you feel like spreading love and compassion.
