This handwoven basket is made of bamboo that grows on the hills of Bhutan. It is known as a “Bangchung” and is the traditional food basket in Bhutan. It is used to pack food like cooked rice and snacks.Traditionally people used to eat in it, nowadays it is use to carry and share food around the table, or as a gift to friend and relative.
The people from the far eastern part of Bhutan known as the “Khengs” are good at weaving these baskets. The traditional skills are handed down through generations. The “Khengs” collect the bamboo in the jungle and slit it down finely before weaving it. The colours used to dye the bamboo are made from natural vegetation and plant roots.
This basket can be used to store food, present bread and snack or simply a decorating item.
